We do not just rely on theory. We build on evidence. With technical guidance from CSIR-CIMAP [ www.cimap.res.in ], SELF launched a pilot programme using the salt-tolerant SIM-Vardhi vetiver variety in Satpada, Puri. Over the past year, the results have been extraordinary.
High yields:
The vetiver not only survived the harsh salinity but thrived, delivering essential oil yields nearly twice the projected levels.
Low barrier to entry:
The pilot proved the commercial viability of a highly resource-efficient model requiring zero irrigation infrastructure, no fertilizer inputs, and minimal weeding.
